Bike Advice

Some advice for those buying bikes (particularly Kris):

  • We found really good deals on our bikes at Sports Authority, at 1690 Folsom Street. You might also try Sports Basement. I've never been there, but burners seem to like them.
  • Get a bike without gears. If you get one with gears, you'll have to remember to never ever touch them.
  • You'll preferably want a beach cruiser. Those bikes have wide handles and big tires and are made for riding on sand.
  • We found very simple Columbia beach cruisers at Sports Authority that seem like they're made just for Burning Man. They have one gear, big tires, wide handlebars, a simple design and pedal-backwards-to-stop breaks rather than cable ones.

Some advice for those bringing bikes (everybody):

  • Get some Valvoline multi-purpose grease for the chain and gears, as well as the mechanism in the rear wheel. Apply it as liberally as you can. Use what you think should be too much. It's greasy and gross but it will keep playa dust from permeating your bearings and chain and destroying them. Also it's pink and who doesn't like pink.
  • Use a bike headlight.
  • Hokey Spokes are awesome: http://www.hokeyspokes.com/
  • For the newbies: your bike is an expression of creativity... decorate it! Pink fur, EL wire, whatever.
